Moorea, French Polynesia. Practicaly the only paved road that goes to the interior of this hilly island is heading to the Belvedere – the viewpoint on the level 240 m above the ocean. I wanted to have a look too. First I was walking by the ring road to Opunohu Bay, passing Hilton hotel. Then there is marker directing you inland. This road is almost empty. Taxis, tour minibuses, rented cars – but they do not want hitchhikers. Climbing slowly the slope I entered high forest (more shade there so easier to climb), passing old marae – cult site. After 3,5 hours of walk I reached the point.
There is nice view from the little terrace of the both bays of Moorea (but kep in mind that there are in the distance) and the massive Pineapple Mountain (Mt Rotui -899 m) between them. I was lucky to get down by car – on the parking it is easier to get a lift. Back in the Cook’s Bay I went to the Chinese shop (they are on every island here) to buy my daily baguette for 53 francs, a can of sardinnes for 86 and a bar 250g of butter for 242.
